IF_Then Statements In Excel

Saw a guy at TCEA (who was selling a book of course) share using Microsloth Office as Math manipulatives for Middle School teachers.  One of the things he shared was using Excel's IF-Then formula in a spreadsheet so students could self-check their work.

The scenario is that a spreadsheet will be on the computer for the students to open. (Independently or small group.) His was an example for algebra classes where the students have to input the right numbers to make the equation a true statement.  The students will know when their work is correct but the feedback given by the IF-Then statement on the sheet.   The sheet is also locked down so students can only change the input cells.

I tried to recreate it quickly and have attached it here. if_then.xls   Feel free to download, deconstruct, and use in anyway you see fit.  I have never used IF formulas in Excel before and this was pretty easy for me since the formula wizard helps build the If statement.

Design your spreadsheet as a student feedback form. Leave directions on the page and leave cells for data input.

To give specific feedback, design the IF formula to look for a specific number and give feedback depending on the value.  You can use the formula wizard  which is found in the menu bar.  Select the cell where you want to put the formula, hit the wizard, and insert your formula.

Your formula will reference another cell.   The presenter suggested that making the cell a different color will make it stand out to students so they more easily know where they are supposed to input their data.
